A Message from Fr. Waldron

In welcoming this first edition of our parish magazine, and in congratulating its promoters, it gives me great pleasure to send to all the parishioners of Killererin, both at home and abroad, my warmest greetings for the season. I know how much exiled parishioners value such a production as this from the home parish. It serves a need also within the community to increase the flow of communication between the different organisations and the different age-groups and to record those passing things that are the life-blood of the community.

Church Renovation

In the past year, our parish Church has seen its first major up-grading since the mammoth reconstruction of 1960. The general consensus is great satisfaction – and we now have one of the finest churches in the diocese. Killererin is such a beautiful church in itself that it was easy to work on and the present re-decoration and other renovations do really enhance its beauty and dignity even more. This has been a total community and united effort that has helped in its own way to give focus, direction and a certain pride in our parish living.

Famine Commemoration

While Ireland basks in something of a modern boom, it has been fitting that this year our parish did not forget the awful famine which struck our land in 1847 just one hundred and fifty years ago. The event was commemorated by a special Mass and service in a packed church here on 26th November.

Establishment of Community Alert and Care of the Elderly groups

Last year, as a result of a diocesan survey, the most significant need identified in our parish was the necessity of greater community concern for old people, especially those living alone. Since then two new organisations have begun or been revitalised in the parish – Community Alert and an organisations who general brief is Care for the Elderly. I wish these two organisations every success and commend them to the support of the entire community.

I also wish to congratulate all who are working for the good of the parish – in the Church itself and in the wider community organisations. Without their active involvement, the place would be a poorer place and our life would be less than Christian.
