The following information on the above photo was provided to us by Sr. Damien Conroy from an old cutting of the Tuam Herald.

“… another reader in that area, who wishes to remain anonymous, has sent me a very fine picture of an L.D.F. group photographed by Mr. Miko McNamara in 1943 at the rear of Shop Street, now the car park behind the A.C.C. building and facing the former D. H. Burke Supermarket, now a furniture store.

I am informed that group, many of whom have passed away, were mostly from Barndrg, Brierfield, Cooloo and Abbeyknockmoy who carried out their drill exercises under the expert eye of the late Captain Kevin Costello. The reason the picture was taken in Tuam was that they had formed a Guard of Honour at a ceremony in the Cathedral and went from there to Mr. McNamara’s house to line up for the camera.
