Commemorating people from the parish who died in the Easter 1916 Rising

To mark centenary of the Easter 1916 Rising, KHS, with the kind permission of Parish Priest Fr. Jarlath Heraty, decided to plant a  tree  in the grounds of St. Mary’s Church, Killererin on the 27th March, 2016. This was to commemorate all those  from the parish that died during the events of the Easter Rising 1916 fighting for what they believed in.

Tree Planting

KHS were the instigators of this project and they were not blessed with good weather. After Sunday Mass in the pouring rain., the ceremony began with a recording of the iconic song ‘Danny Boy’ followed by opening prayers. John O’Connell and Patrick Stone then planted the tree and a blessing by Fr. Jarlath followed..

Proclamation was read

The proclamation was then read by Bernadette Forde, Togher and Gerry Connolly, Clogherboy after which members of the community were invited to to throw soil on to the base of the tree. This proved to be a very moving part of the ceremony and emotional for some.

Proceedings concluded with everyone coming together to sing our National Anthem.
