Robert William Waithman of Moyne House

Robert William Waithman, a member of a Lancashire family, came to Ireland in the 1860s and purchased estates in the Landed Estates Court.

Strange sightings outside Moyne House

On 16th April, 1921 Waithman was mentioned in the Tuam Herald in an article ‘Local Haunted Houses’. The article refers to Moyne Park, BallygluNin, where on October 6th each year, a carriage and a pair of horses are said to appear and drive up the avenue. The article, written by an anonymous reader, stated that he knew a man, a Mr. Edward Kelly of Cooloo who used to stay with Waithman. Mr. Kelly stated that at dusk ‘he distinctly saw that carriage and thought it was someone coming to dinner at Moyne. There were lights on the two sides of the carriage and he saw it distinctly’.

Waithman owns vast acres in Galway

In the 1870s Robert W. Waithman owned nearly 3,500 acres in Co. Galway, as well as land in Galway City and Roscommon.1
